From PyData Talk to New York Fed Report 📊
Last fall, Pim Welle (ACDHS) joined PyData Pittsburgh to share ongoing work modeling the downstream effects of involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations. That project is now formally published as a New York Fed Staff Report: “A Danger to Self and Others: Health and Criminal Consequences of Involuntary Hospitalization.”
Using Allegheny County data, Pim and Allegheny County Human Services Data Science team the show that, for patients whose hospitalization depends on clinician discretion, being hospitalized nearly doubles the risk of death by suicide/overdose and the risk of being charged with a violent crime within three months; they also document income and housing destabilization. We're proud that this careful, policy-relevant analysis that began here and is now informing a national debate. Read the summary and Pim’s original linkedin post.
